WHAT IS THE IRI?

We support research that addresses aspects of technology development, social trends or problems, ethics, and/or justice relating to the Internet. The goal is to encourage projects that help us better understand the intersections between technology and society, so that we might envision a more ethical and equitable relationship to Internet technologies as they progress into future. Prize winners benefit from an intellectual environment with fellow prize awardees, dedicated lab space, and mentoring with faculty and outside experts. Their research year culminates in a final presentation of their findings. For past showcases, see the Events tab.

WHY?

The IRI is dedicated to nurturing and unleashing the huge potential for innovation that lies in undergraduate students at UCLA.  The prize supports research that through experiment, design, and analysis helps us learn more or contribute to the equitable and ethical development of the Internet.

In addition to the daily work of classes, studying, and assignments, students may be occupied with part time employment that has little benefit to their future careers or development. They typically have little access to mentors, funding, or encouragement to explore burning ideas and research questions at the intersection of technology and society. Through a prize incentive and mentor support, the IRI inspires undergraduates across disciplines to put forward and implement their most revolutionary ideas.

Applications are now closed for the 2024/2025 IRI program

This prize is possible with generous seed support from Venky Harinarayan, and is based in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science at UCLA.
